Gwendoline Butler, who also wrote under the pseudonym Jennie Melville, was born in London in 1922 and still enjoys considerable popularity amongst readers today. Her main series character is Inspector John Coffin, an excellent, well rounded character who has developed nicely over the years. Her work was rewarded by the Crime Writers Association who awarded her a Silver Dagger in 1973. Under the name Jennie Melville she had one main series character, Charmian Daniels. Some of these books are standard mystery novels but under this name the author also strayed into the romance genre, and indeed was given an award by the Romantic Novelists Association in 1981 in recognition of her work. |

Final Word
Gwendoline Butler is a leading name amongst both crime writers and mystery
readers. Whilst not quite
reaching the heights of popularity enjoyed by the likes of P.D. James and Ruth
Rendell, she is certainly
up there with them in terms of quality writing. An author in fact we expect to
improve considerably in the yes of collectors.
