James Hadley Chase was the pen name of Rene Brabazon Raymond, the author also had 3 other pseudonyms. Born in London in 1906 this author had a very prolific career and was a hugely popular thriller writer. His first book, No Orchids for Miss Blandish was published in 1939 by the Jarrolds publishing house. He had several series characters, amongst them were Al Barney, Dave Fenner and Steve Harmas. His style was hard-boiled in nature but being an English author with no real experience of America it is, perhaps, a little ambitious to set all one's books there. Still, he wrote over 80 books and sold millions of copies so he must have appealed to the general public. |

Final Word
Unlike some of his peers, James Hadley Chase does still remain popular amongst
readers and collectors alike.
Later titles were all bestsellers so consequently published in huge numbers
making them fairly common on the secondhand
market today. That said truly fine copies of later books may still be of
interest, especially if there is a run of them.
