Josephine Tey, real name Elizabeth Mackintosh, was born in Scotland in 1897 and died in 1952. She worked in education as physical training instructor initially. Her main series character under this name was Inspector Alan Grant. Her output was slight but what it lacked in volume it more than made up for in quality. Only eight novels under this name and three others under her other pen name Gordon Daviot. Her style is set firmly in the Golden Age school of mystery fiction and not dissimilar to Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie. This is definitely a case of an author being under appreciated today. Those familiar with her work know only too well how it stands up against many much better known writers. Always very well plotted with solid characters who are all well rounded and indeed believable. If you have not read any of this authors work then we highly recommend you do so - you will not be disappointed. |
