| GARDNER JOHN - CHRISTOPHER WOOD |
A Unique Batch of Books |
London, Cape, 1977,
First Edition, Hard Cover,
/Dust Jacket
Signed by Author A unique batch of first UK books comprising: "James Bond, The Spy who Loved Me" (Cape 1977) and "James Bond and Moonraker" (Cape 1979) both by Christopher Wood and "For Special Services" (Cape 1982) and "Icebreaker" (Cape 1983) By John Gardner. Each book is in at least fine condition in like D/W. These 4 books are well-known for their D/W artwork by Bill Botten. At my request Mr Botten has painted a part of the dust wrapper design onto the front free end-paper of each book. For James Bond, The Spy who Loved Me he has used the gun lying on the table next to the red rose. For James Bond and Moonraker he has painted the gun next to the lipstick with the green glass bowls next to it with the plane in the background. The scene painted from "For Special Services" is the snakes head with the brown shoe next to it. Finally for Icebreaker Bill Botten has painted the skeletal hand with the ski pole through it. Bill Botten has signed and numbered each painting below his art-work. These front free end-paper paintings are one of only 9 sets commissioned by me for clients. All are in private hands except for this set: 006. The Icebreaker is also signed by John Gardner on the title page and by Bill Botten as "Artistic Director to 007". For Special Services is inscribed by John Gardner on the title page. James Bond and Moponraker is additionally signed by Bill Botten as "Artistic Director to James Bond" on the ½ title. A unique opportunity. For the batch of 4 items |

| GIBBONS STELLA |
Cold Comfort Farm |

First Edition, Hard Cover,
/Dust Jacket
First UK Edition. A touch of dustiness to the top edge and very slight darkening to the spine overall a near fine (or better) copy in the VERY RARE original D/W priced seven and sixpence net on the inside flap. The D/W has a small chip at the top left hand corner of the spine and is creased at the head of the spine but overall is a lovely, honest example. Cold Comfort Farm is one of the last century’s most famous comic novels. It parodies the romanticised, sometimes doom-laden accounts of rural life popular at the time. Shows well. |

| GRIBBLE LEONARD |
The Arsenal Stadium Mystery |
London, Harrap, 1939,
First Edition, Hard Cover,
/Dust Jacket
Signed First UK Edition. Foxing to the edges and some darkening to the spine which also has several dark spots particularly to the top inch or so otherwise a VG copy. The price-clipped D/W is VG indeed with minor rubbing/light creasing to the front panel and a couple of small chips at the spine ends marginally affecting the lettering. The D/W image shows Manager George Allison giving a tactical briefing to his team. Allison took over at Arsenal after the untimely death of Herbert Chapman and led the team to three successive championships. An Inspector Slade Detective Story and very uncommon. The basis for the film of the same name starring Leslie Banks. Allison also had a speaking role in the film delivering the line: It’s one-nil to the Arsenal. That’s the way we like it which has remaine d part of the Arsenal mythos, encapsulated in the famous chant One-nil to the Arsenal. With the former owner’s name (Nancy Fielder) in pen and her initials stamped on the FFEP. Included with the book is a letter addressed To whom it may Concern from Nancy M Frost (whose maiden name was Nancy M Fielder) from her home in Kenya, East Africa. The letter dated 11/1/2006 says: This book was given to me by my father, Ralph Fielder, in the early 1940’s. He was a personal friend and business associate of George Allison and was a Director of the Arsenal Football Club. As such he got the team of the time to autograph it. The artwork was done by Bernard Joy, the amateur centre-half, He was a school-teacher. My father used to take me to all Arsenal’s home games, held on the ‘Spurs ground at White Hart Lane, as the Highbury Stadium had been commandeered by the Gov’t. From this ground, I witnessed the German bombing of the London Docks. Thanks to television, I still avidly follow Arsenal, but now feel that this book should be in the hands of a younger enthusiast. I hope it is treasured and enjoyed. Nancy M Frost. M.B.E. Aged 81. I have subsequently learnt that Ralph Fielder (who died in the 1950’s) was an accountant who audited the Arsenal FC accounts from the late 1930’s into the early years of the War. On the verso of the front free end-paper Bernard Joy has written Arsenal FC 1942 (in a beautiful calligraphic style) and the team and management of the time have penned their signatures (a total of 18 names). Immediately recognisable are the signatures of George Allison (Manager), Tom Whittaker (Trainer), L Scott, Bernard Joy, Denis Compton, Leslie Compton, Joe Shaw, Alf Kircham, Ted Drake, Eddie Hapgood, George Male, Jack Crayston, Reg Lewis, E Collett and Cliff Bastin. Also laid in is an Arsenal Football Club Ltd. Official Programme (rather edge-worn) from the Arsenal v Watford match that took place on 13th March 1943. This book belongs either with a keen Arsenal fan or with the Arsenal Museum at the Emirates Stadium. |

London, Hamlyn, 1979,
First Edition, Hard Cover,
/Dust Jacket
First UK Edition. A near fine (or slightly better) copy in like D/W with a tiny rub at the bottom left hand corner of the back panel. Overall, a lovely copy of an uncommon book. [The novelisation of the highly-acclaimed 1973 cult movie of the same name widely perceived as the most original and haunting British horror movie ever with a brilliant script by Anthony Shaffer who also wrote ‘Sleuth’ and Hitchcock’s ‘Frenzy’. The movie was directed by Robin Hardy and starred Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland and Diane Cilento. Christopher Lee regards it as the best movie he has ever been involved with and describes it as one of the three or four greatest movies ever made in Britain. A cornucopia of music, sensuality and paganism set in a modern world. The movie was re-made in 2006 (to less critical acclaim) and directed by Neil LaBute starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn]. |

| HEANEY SEAMUS |
Eleven Poems |
London, 1965,
First Edition,
(Belfast: Festival Publications, Queen's University 1965). First Edition, Third Issue. Stiff Green paper wrappers, stapled; black stamping with black drummer on front cover. No statement of edition. Contents printed on heavy gray paper with a different sequence of poems (from the first and second issues). A VG+ copy. This fragile pamphlet was published in November 1965, runs to only 16 pages and collects some of Heaney's earliest poems. Eleven Poems enjoyed coverage and recognition in the London press exposing Heaney's work to an audience beyond Ireland and providing his London publisher (Faber) with a welcome spot of publicity for his forthcoming debut book (Death of a Naturalist). Eleven Poems signified more than just the commencement of Heaney's own career as a poet; it also marked a particularly crucial moment in the literary history of Northern Ireland. The 1965 Literary Festival from which Eleven Poems was issued was, to a large extent, a much-needed literary renaissance and artistic rebirth in Northern Ireland. . There is a certain amount of bibliographical debate about the different editions of Eleven Poems. This particular pamphlet is bound in stiff green wrappers and printed on heavy gray paper. This is referred to as the "Third Issue" in R B Russell's Guide to First Edition Prices and also by Allen & Patricia Ahearn in their excellent "Collected Books: The Guide to Values". An alternative view was, however, expressed in the American Book Collector (March/April 1982) in its article Seamus Heaney: A Bibliographical Checklist where this edition is called a "Second Edition". The Author's rare first book of which no more than a few hundred were printed. Scarce. |

First UK Edition. A VG (or better) copy with slight foxing to the page edges but with clean pages and tightly bound. The D/W is also in VG condition and is NOT price-clipped. It has several small scuffs and some small 3-6 mm tears to the top edge of the front panel. Still an attractive copy. This is the poignant story of Noisy Rhysling, the radiation-blinded space-going song-writer whose poetic skills rival Rudyard Kipling’s. |

| HERBERT BENSON |
Crisis 1992 ! |
London, Richards Press, 1936,
First Edition, Hard Cover,
/Dust Jacket
First UK Edition. Original blue cloth with black titles to the spine. Apart from a few darkened areas (caused by sellotape residue unnecessarily applied to strengthen the verso of the D/W) this is a really nice copy in near fine condition. There are neat reference numbers on both the front free end-paper and the title page. The D/W is price-clipped and would have been in fine condition except for the tape applied to the verso. This has been removed by one of the World's leading archivists. Some tape residue still shows through to the front of the D/W but this is not too unobtrusive. The hinges on the verso of the D/W have been neatly reinforced archivally. A very scarce science fiction novel, an "Interplanetary adventure story of the future when an alien planet enters the solar system". Described by George Locke as "A hard book to come by on the open market". (Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy p. 111). |

With the VERY RARE yellow wrap-around band with the quotation from Arthur C Clarke: Unique among modern sf novels in the depth of its characterisation and the extraordinary detail of the world it creates. I know nothing comparable to it in sf or fantasy except The Lord of the Rings; and from Damon Knight: Clearly destined to become a science fiction classic. The band also announces: NEBULA AWARD WINNER for the best novel of the year. Scarce with the band the first example I have seen in the last 12 years. |
